I have a 2002 Ford Escort ZX2. It has an automatic transmission.
When I am idling with the gearshift in "D" (stopped at a stop sign or stop light, for example), it vibrates VERY much. The whole car shakes. You can feel it in the seat and in the steering wheel. It even makes a rattling sound.
It doesn't do this while in "D" and actually driving (not stopped).
It also does not do this when the car is in "P" (park).
It only does it when the car is in "D" and I am holding down the brake pedal.

What's going on here? I've had the car for over a year, and the person I bought it from told me about this issue beforehand, but added quickly that it had always done this and it wasn't a problem.

Do I need to get anything repaired? It doesn't seem to be affecting anything, but at the same time, all of that vibrating can't be good, can it? (bolts being shaken loose, or something?)

Escort's just don't have a smooth idle when the car is in gear under a load. Unless the car has a vacuum leak causing this you probably have nothing to worry about. If there is a vacuum leak there's a good chance it's a cracked or split hose going to the PCV valve and the fuel mileage would probably be below normal.
